QII-Eighty

The QII-Eighty is a mono power amplifier that continues the design approach of Peter Walker's original QUAD II. Tim DeParavicini designed it, and it delivers 80 W RMS into a selectable 4 ohm or 8 ohm load.
The output stage uses four KT88 valves arranged as two push-pull pairs. The output transformer uses partial cathode loading, which is a characteristic QUAD topology. The signal path also uses two 6SL7 valves and one 6SN7 valve, and the specification lists EF86 valves alongside the distortion figures. Full output needs a nominal 1 V RMS input signal.
Measured performance includes a frequency response of 10 Hz to 30 kHz (+0 dB, -0.5 dB) and 3 Hz to 50 kHz (-3 dB), a damping factor of 16 at 1 kHz referred to 8 ohms, and residual hum and noise better than -94 dB. Maximum power consumption is 240 VA.
