Cur síos

The U 89 i is a large diaphragm condenser microphone that pairs a transformer-coupled circuit with the K89 dual-diaphragm capsule. It uses a pressure gradient transducer and offers five polar patterns: omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure-8. The tonal balance is described as staying consistent when switching patterns, with an even diffuse-field response and uncolored off-axis pickup.

A three-position low-cut filter (linear, 80 Hz, 160 Hz) helps with rumble and proximity effect. A switchable 6 dB pre-attenuation raises the maximum SPL from 134 dB to 140 dB at 0.5% THD. It was introduced in 1980 as a development of the U 87 concept, with a smaller and lighter body.

Typical uses include voice-over, film dubbing, vocals, and orchestral recording as a main or spot microphone. It connects through a 3-pin XLR and runs on 48 V phantom power. It comes in nickel (U 89 i) or black (U 89 i mt) and is supplied in a wooden box.
