The Firebird Platypus recalls the transitional Firebirds of early 1965, when the headstock changed from the two-layer reverse shape to a flat, non-reverse shape resembling a platypus bill, with six tuners in a row. This version has a mahogany body that looks like a traditional neck-through Firebird, but the mahogany neck is glued in as a set neck. The neck has a SlimTaper profile, a rosewood fretboard with a 12" radius, 22 medium jumbo frets and acrylic trapezoid inlays.

The headstock carries Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners and a Graph Tech nut, and it has been modified slightly to give a straight string pull for better tuning stability. Strings pass over a Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge and are anchored by an aluminium Stop Bar tailpiece.

Two Firebird mini humbuckers with Alnico 5 magnets are selected with a 3-way toggle, with a volume and a tone control for each pickup. The pickguard bears the hot-stamped Firebird graphic. The guitar is passive and connects through a 1/4" output jack. A Gibson hardshell case and a Gibson accessory kit are included.
