EarthQuaker Devices Discontinued Released 2010

Hoof Reaper

A guitar pedal that combines two hybrid fuzz circuits, the Hoof and the Tone Reaper, with a monophonic analog octave-up in one enclosure. It suits guitarists who want to run the fuzzes alone, together or with the octave. The maker lists it as no longer in production.

  • Hoof and Tone Reaper fuzzes plus analog octave up in one enclosure
  • Three footswitches give seven on/off switching combinations
  • Hoof has Level, Fuzz, Tone and Shift (mid-range) controls
  • Relay-based true bypass with latching and momentary modes
  • 9 V DC, 2.1 mm negative centre, 18 mA current draw
  • Listed by the maker as no longer in production

Description

The pedal puts three separate effects in one box: a Muff-style germanium/silicon hybrid fuzz (Hoof), a vintage-style silicon/germanium hybrid fuzz based on the three-knob bender (Tone Reaper), and a classic monophonic octave up. Each has its own footswitch, so any one can be used alone or combined in series. The order of the effects is fixed. Seven switching combinations are available, from a single effect up to all three together.

The Hoof section has Level, Fuzz, Tone and Shift controls. Shift changes the response of the tone control, scooping the mids when turned clockwise and emphasising them when turned counterclockwise. The Tone Reaper section has Level, Fuzz and Tone controls. The octave is monophonic, so it is more pronounced on the neck pickup and when playing above the 12th fret. It was first released as a limited run in 2010 and later returned to the regular line.

It uses relay-based true bypass (Flexi-Switch), which allows both latching and momentary operation. Because the switching is relay based, the pedal needs power to pass signal. It runs from a 9 V DC supply with a 2.1 mm negative-centre barrel connector and draws 18 mA. A limited lifetime warranty applies.
