The CS-3 is a stompbox compressor built around a VCA circuit. It reduces loud signals and raises quiet ones to even out volume. The Sustain knob sets how much compression is applied, which tightens the sound and lengthens note decay without distortion. The Attack knob sets how quickly the circuit reacts: clockwise settings keep the pick attack for a snappier, more percussive feel, while counterclockwise settings tame peaks more progressively.

A Tone knob shapes the high-frequency response of the compressed signal, so the pedal can be set brighter for cutting parts or softer and mellower for jazz and neo soul. A Level knob sets the output volume. The circuit is designed for low noise and has buffered bypass, and a CHECK indicator also serves as the battery check.

The pedal has 1/4-inch input and output jacks and a DC IN jack. It runs on a 9V battery or on an optional PSA series AC adaptor, which is sold separately. It has been in continuous production since 1986 and carries a five-year warranty.
