The H4n records to SD or SDHC cards and can capture four tracks at once: the built-in adjustable X/Y stereo microphone plus two external mic, line or instrument inputs. Files are saved as BWF-compliant WAV up to 24-bit/96 kHz or as MP3. Onboard mid-side decoding, auto-record, pre-record and time stamping help with field work.
For music-making it offers overdubbing with punch-in/out, internal mixdown, a built-in effects section with guitar and bass amp models, a chromatic tuner and a metronome. Playback speed can be changed from 50% to 150% without altering pitch, and loop playback uses user-set start and stop points.
The two combo inputs supply 24 V or 48 V phantom power, and a mini jack input provides plug-in power for compatible mics. A USB port lets it work as an SD card reader or as a 2-in/2-out audio interface for PC and Mac. It runs on two AA batteries or the supplied AC adapter and mounts on a mic stand, tripod or, with an optional adapter, a DSLR.
