The H4n Pro is a battery-powered handheld recorder with adjustable X/Y condenser microphones, two locking XLR/TRS combo inputs with switchable phantom power, and a stereo mini input for an external mic or line source. The built-in mics can handle levels up to 140 dB SPL, and recording runs up to 24-bit/96 kHz in BWF-compliant WAV or in MP3.
Three recording modes cover different jobs. Stereo mode records the internal or external mics, 4-channel mode captures the room mics and a stereo board feed at once, and MTR mode works as a four-track studio with overdubbing, punch-in/out and bounce. Effects include compression/limiting, low-cut, modulation, reverb/delay and amp models. A tuner, metronome and looper are also onboard. Pre-Record keeps audio from just before the record button is pressed, and Auto-Record starts and stops capture at set levels.
Audio is stored on SD or SDHC cards. A USB 2.0 port works for mass storage and as a 2-in/2-out audio interface for PC or Mac. The unit runs on two AA batteries or on the optional AD-14 adapter, and it mounts on a mic stand or tripod.
