The H3-VR combines a four-capsule Ambisonic microphone, a recorder and an Ambisonics decoder in one portable unit. It records raw Ambisonics A-format or ready-to-use B-format (FuMa or AmbiX) up to 24-bit/96 kHz, so no computer is needed to convert files. It can also record binaural stereo and standard stereo WAV files with BWF and iXML metadata.
A 6-axis motion sensor detects whether the unit is upright, upside down, endfire or endfire inverted, and the orientation is handled automatically so audio lines up with video. One gain knob controls all four capsules together, and there is a limiter, an adjustable low cut filter, a slate tone and a sound marker for syncing. Binaural monitoring of the Ambisonic signal and on-board playback with rotation are included.
Recordings go to a microSD card. A 3.5 mm line out feeds cameras or other devices, and a headphone jack allows monitoring. In USB audio interface mode it works as a 360 mic for a computer, a stereo mic for iOS devices, or a conference microphone. Free ZOOM Ambisonics Player software converts files to stereo, binaural or 5.1ch surround. With the optional BTA-1 adapter, the H3 Control app provides remote control from an iOS device.
