The F4 records up to six discrete input tracks plus a stereo mix at up to 24-bit/192 kHz in BWF-compatible WAV (MP3 also available). Four locking XLR/TRS combo inputs each have a dedicated preamp, gain knob, phantom power, six-segment LED meter and record-ready and PFL switches. Inputs 5/6 come from a 3.5 mm stereo input or a Zoom capsule input, and can serve as a camera return for monitoring only.
An onboard mixer routes any input to any output, pre- or post-fader, with level, pan and delay. Each channel has a high-pass filter, phase inversion and Mid-Side decoding. Look-ahead hybrid limiters and Zoom AutoMix are included. A TCXO generates time code at 0.2 ppm accuracy, with drop-frame and non-drop formats, jam sync and BNC in/out. Dual-channel mode makes safety tracks for inputs 1 and 2, and files are saved periodically during recording as protection against power loss or card removal.
It records to two SD/SDHC/SDXC cards at once, and also records to a computer over USB while it writes to a card. USB also serves as a 6-in/4-out audio interface. Power comes from 8 AA batteries, a 4-pin HIROSE external DC source, or the included AD-19 adapter. Bluetooth is not supported.
