Description

The N1X is a hybrid piano that models the playing experience of a grand. It uses real wooden keys and a key action derived from Yamaha grand pianos. A continuous optical sensor under each key and a sensor on each hammer shank register speed, depth and hammer timing without altering the feel of the action.

Two piano voices are available at the touch of a button: a Yamaha CFX concert grand and a Bösendorfer Imperial. Samples were taken at four positions on the soundboard, and a three-way speaker system with separate amplifiers for low, mid and high bands reproduces them. Virtual Resonance Modeling simulates string and body resonance across all 88 notes. The damper pedal recreates the changing resistance of a grand pedal and supports half-pedaling. Binaural sampling is used for the CFX voice when playing through headphones.

The piano connects to computers and mobile devices over USB, to audio systems through cables, to Bluetooth sources as a receiver, and to iOS apps over WiFi. The Smart Pianist app provides a graphical control interface. A USB flash drive can be used to record performances as WAV audio files.
