The DR-44WL is a four-channel portable recorder that records WAV/BWF at up to 96 kHz/24-bit, with optional simultaneous MP3 recording. Its built-in cardioid condenser capsules sit in an X-Y arrangement, each in its own shockmount to reduce handling noise, and can handle levels up to 132 dB SPL. Two XLR/TRS combo inputs accept mic or line sources, with 48V phantom power for condenser microphones.
Recording tools include Dual-Level Recording, which writes a second, lower-level safety file alongside the main one, and Dual-Format Recording, which writes WAV and MP3 at the same time (16-bit 44.1/48 kHz WAV only). A four-track mode and an MTR multitrack mode are available, plus M-S decoding, a reverb effect and variable-speed playback from 0.5x to 2.0x.
The unit creates its own 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access point, so no router is needed. The free DR Control app for iOS and Android handles remote recording, level and low-cut adjustment, file transfer and streaming monitoring of recorded audio. Power comes from four AA batteries, USB bus power or the supplied AC adapter. Recordings go to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards, and a micro-B USB port serves as a mass-storage connection to a computer.
