The 788 Digital Portastudio is a self-contained multitrack workstation that records eight tracks at 24-bit resolution to a 7.5GB internal hard disk, which holds close to two hours of 8-track material. It offers 250 virtual tracks for comping and alternate takes, and non-destructive editing with 999 levels of undo.

On board are digital effects including reverb, chorus, distortion and multi-effects, along with a 3-band EQ that has a true parametric mid band. Inputs accept mic and line levels, and a HiZ switch lets a guitar or bass be plugged in directly. Stereo mixdown outputs, monitor outputs and aux outputs each have their own connectors.

For connection, MIDI In and Out jacks allow syncing to sequencers and other devices using MIDI Time Code, MIDI Machine Control and MIDI Clock. An S/PDIF digital output feeds CD and DAT recorders for two-track masters, and a SCSI port is used for data archiving and for connecting a compatible CD burner.
