Amethyst is a moving magnet phono cartridge from Sumiko's Oyster Series, built around a low-impedance, low-noise generator with a nude line-contact stylus on a hollow aluminum cantilever. It suits turntable owners looking for a quiet, balanced MM cartridge with an upgradeable stylus path.

Amethyst is the top moving magnet model in the Oyster Series. It combines a revised low-impedance, low-noise generator with a low-mass nude line-contact stylus mounted on a stiff hollow cantilever. The reduced moving mass is intended to let the stylus motion pass cleanly to the fixed coil assembly. The coils are high-purity copper, and the body and generator are built as an integrated system to carry unwanted resonance away to the tonearm.
The stylus assembly is interchangeable with the Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone and Wellfleet cartridges, so a different stylus can be fitted later or a spare kept for worn records. Amethyst uses an enhanced body design compared with the others in the family but accepts the same range of styli, including the RS 78 stylus for 78rpm records.
It is a standard-mount MM design with a 47kΩ load, 2.5mV output and a recommended tracking force of 2.0g, so it works with ordinary MM phono stages. Each unit is hand-assembled in Yokohama, Japan, by Excel Sound.
