Crescendo 8 is a rack-mount preamp with eight identical channels. Each channel has an analog potentiometer for gain from +18 dB to +70 dB, 48 V phantom power with an LED indicator, a 180° polarity reversal switch and a 20 dB PAD. A VU-10 switch lowers the displayed VU meter level by 10 dB so that high levels can be read.
The audio stage runs from an internal +/-60 V supply using SPL's own 120V SUPRA operational amplifiers, which work in class A and largely avoid coupling capacitors. Input stages use matched transistor pairs. The maker quotes a maximum output level of 32.5 dBu, which is 12 dB more headroom than typical +/-15 V designs. With the PAD engaged the unit can also take line-level signals.
Every channel has two parallel outputs: a balanced XLR line output and a DB25 output. The DB25 connection suits multichannel AD converters and removes the need for an external splitter when a backup recording system is used. The unit has a black anodized aluminium front panel and a powder-coated steel housing, and is made in Germany. It has an internal linear power supply with a toroidal transformer and a selectable 115 V or 230 V mains setting.
