The WH-1000XM5 is a closed wireless headphone with adaptive noise cancelling. The HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 and Integrated Processor V1 work with eight microphones, four on each earcup, and Auto NC Optimizer adjusts cancelling to the wearing conditions and to factors such as atmospheric pressure. A 30mm driver with a carbon fibre composite dome handles playback, and DSEE Extreme upscales compressed files in real time.
For calls, four beamforming microphones and an AI-trained noise reduction algorithm isolate the wearer's voice, with a dedicated structure to reduce wind noise. Convenience functions include Adaptive Sound Control, Speak-to-Chat, Wear to Play, a capacitive wear sensor, touch controls on the right earcup and voice assistant support for Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri. The Sound Connect app handles sound settings, shortcuts and Safe Listening checks.
The headphones connect over Bluetooth with LDAC, can be paired to two devices at once (multipoint), and support Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair. Battery life is up to 30 hours. A wired connection is possible with the supplied cable, and a soft collapsible case is included.
