The WF-1000XM3 is a pair of truly wireless earbuds with active noise cancelling. Two microphones per earbud, one feed-forward and one feed-back, pick up ambient sound, and the QN1e processor handles the cancelling. The same chip also does 24-bit signal processing and digital-to-analogue conversion with a headphone amplifier. A 6mm dome-type driver produces the sound, and DSEE HX upscales compressed digital files.
Control is by touch. Covering an earbud with a finger lowers the volume and lets ambient sound in (Quick Attention), and taps can switch between noise cancelling and ambient sound. Functions such as voice assistants and volume can be assigned per earbud in the companion app, which also provides Adaptive Sound Control, Ambient Sound Control and an equalizer. A proximity sensor in each earbud pauses playback when one is removed and resumes it when it is replaced.
The earbuds connect over Bluetooth, with NFC in the case. The chip sends audio to both earbuds simultaneously, and either earbud can be used for calls. Battery life is up to 6 hours per charge with noise cancelling on, extended to up to 24 hours with the magnetic USB-C charging case.
