The VP83F is an on-camera shotgun condenser microphone with a supercardioid/lobar pickup pattern aimed at capturing the subject in front of it while rejecting background noise. It records straight to a microSD card as 24-bit / 48 kHz WAV files, so a backup track can be kept that never passes through the camera's preamps. An 8 GB card holds up to 15 hours of audio.
Operation is handled by a backlit LCD that shows level, battery life, track information, headphone volume, gain, low cut filter and remaining recording time. A five-position joystick covers monitoring, low cut, gain, track management and playback, and a dedicated button starts recording. Gain adjusts over 60 dB in 1 dB steps. A Rycote Lyre shock mount is built in to reduce handling and vibration noise, and a foam windscreen is included.
The mic connects to a camera through a detachable coiled cable with a 3.5 mm connector, and a separate 3.5 mm output allows real-time headphone monitoring. It runs on two AA batteries and mounts via a standard shoe mount with a threaded base. It can also be used with portable audio recorders.
