The V-Piano generates its piano sound by physical modelling rather than playing back samples, so there is no velocity switching. It has up to 264 virtual strings, 24 preset tones and 100 user tones, and parameters such as unison tune, hammer hardness, cross resonance, string, damper and soundboard resonance, damping time and damping noise can be edited. The Evolution system update adds four piano models: Vertical, V1 Impactance, Triple Large and Metallic SB.
The keyboard is an 88-key PHA III Ivory Feel action with escapement. A 240 x 64 dot backlit display, volume and ambience knobs, 12 ambience types and a 4-band equalizer cover everyday control. It also includes a GM2 sound generator (16 parts, 256 tones, 128-voice polyphony) and a one-track MIDI recorder that can play MIDI and audio files.
Outputs come in two stereo pairs (1/4" and XLR), plus a coaxial digital output, headphone output and line input. MIDI IN/OUT/THRU and USB ports handle MIDI, memory and system updates, and a V-Piano Editor for Windows and Mac is available.
