The SP-404A records and plays back samples in 16-bit linear WAV/AIFF format at 44.1 kHz, with up to 12 voices of polyphony. Samples and patterns are stored on an SD card (SDHC up to 32 GB). Sampling comes from the built-in mono mic, a mic input, or RCA line inputs. A Sub Pad provides rapid-repeat triggering, and three control knobs handle live adjustment.
The unit has 29 DSP effects, including filter, isolator, delay, reverb, chorus, voice transformer, subsonic and looper, with seamless switching between them. A limiter mode is used in 17 of the effect types, and with a DJ mixer the unit can serve as a standalone effects processor. A pattern sequencer records in real time with shuffle quantize, 1–99 measures per pattern and 120 stored patterns.
A MIDI cable from the AIRA TR-8 (system version 1.50 or later) lets each TR-8 track trigger SP-404A samples. Feeding the SP-404A stereo output into the TR-8 external input allows the TR-8 Scatter and Side Chain functions to process the samples. Samples can be imported from a Mac or Windows computer with the dedicated software. It runs from an AC adaptor or six AA batteries, and the included SD card holds a Loopmasters sample library.
