The HPD-20 is a hand-played percussion pad built around a SuperNATURAL sound engine. Thirteen pads are laid out in a circle in different sizes. Besides striking them, you can press or touch a pad to dampen, mute or retune another pad's sound, which allows conga and tabla style techniques as well as electronic textures. A Roll button, a Realtime Modify knob and a D-BEAM controller add further control over sounds and effects.
The unit holds 850 instruments and 200 kits, 100 of them ready-made. Kits can be edited per instrument and two sounds can be layered and blended or switched by playing velocity. Three multi-effects engines offer 25 effect types each, with 10 ambience types and a 3-band kit EQ on top. Up to 500 user WAV sounds can be imported from USB flash memory, with a total of 12 minutes mono or 6 minutes stereo. Quick Rec records performances and exports them as WAV files.
Connections include a USB Computer port for audio and MIDI with a Mac or Windows computer, a USB Memory port, MIDI In and Out, a trigger input for a Roland pad, a hi-hat controller jack, a footswitch jack, a mix input, stereo outputs and a headphone output.
