The FR-8xb is a self-contained digital accordion with a 92-button right-hand keyboard and 120 bass buttons. Its piston-style buttons use a synthetic pearl material, and a Dynamic Bellows Behavior system adjusts air resistance in real time according to the selected register and the number of notes played. The function can be switched off for players who prefer the bellows feel of earlier V-Accordions.
The sound set covers accordion tones from several regions, more than 180 orchestra and percussion sounds, 18 drum sets and Virtual Tone Wheel organ sounds with harmonic bar control. Four multi-effects engines serve the accordion and orchestra sections, and an onboard looper records and overdubs parts. Right-hand modes allow up to four tones at once, and 1,400 user programs store setups. Three programmable chin switches control functions without leaving the keys.
The instrument has a 2.4-inch colour display, built-in 2 x 25 W amplification and a rechargeable battery that charges from the supplied AC adapter during play. Connections include line outputs, headphones, MIDI, a USB memory port for MP3/WAV playback, recording and updates, and a USB port for computer use.
