The FP-40 uses the Piano Reality sound engine, which blends sampled piano sounds with modeling taken from Roland's higher-end instruments, and offers 256-note polyphony. The keyboard is the PHA-4 Standard, with escapement, Ivory Feel key surfaces and triple-sensor detection for quicker note repetition. A redesigned speaker system with two 12 W amplifiers aims to give a fuller low register.
The piano works with the Piano Sphere learning app, built with Skoove. The Piano Sphere button lights up to give feedback while you play. The app includes 100 songs and three free courses, with an optional upgrade to more than 1000 songs and lessons. The Roland Piano App adds sound settings and Piano Designer controls.
It is the first Roland piano with built-in Wi-Fi, used for over-the-air updates. Bluetooth 5.4 handles audio and MIDI, and a USB-C port connects to computers and mobile devices. A headphone jack serves quiet practice, and the jack also accepts a headset microphone for lessons and streaming. A shallow chassis keeps the body slim and light.
