The AE-20 is an electronic wind instrument built around a breath sensor and a bite sensor, with a reed-style mouthpiece. Fingering can be set for sax, clarinet, flute, recorder or brass, and the instrument covers a seven-octave range with instant transposition. Sounds come from two engines: SuperNATURAL acoustic tones for saxophones, clarinet, flute, trumpet, strings and world instruments, and the ZEN-Core Synthesis System for analog-style and modern synth voices. More than 260 preset Scenes ship on board, with 600 user Scenes and 12 favorites.
A 128 x 32 dot OLED display and dedicated controls handle navigation. Sound can come from the built-in speakers, a stereo headphone jack or a 1/4-inch stereo output for an amp or PA. It runs from an AC adaptor or six Ni-MH AA batteries, so it can be played away from a power outlet.
USB Type-C carries audio and MIDI to a computer, and Bluetooth handles audio streaming and MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy. The free Aerophone Pro Editor app for iOS and Android edits sounds and Scenes and works as a librarian. The Aerophone Lesson app covers basic technique, and Roland Cloud offers additional Sound Packs.
