The A-88 is a USB MIDI controller built around an 88-key Ivory Feel-G keyboard with Progressive Hammer Action and escapement, the same type of keyboard used in Roland's flagship pianos. White keys have a moisture-absorbing surface, and key resistance grades from the low to the high end.
Controls include two assignable knobs (C1, C2), two assignable buttons (S1, S2), a pitch bend/modulation lever and a D-BEAM controller. Dedicated Dual and Split buttons give quick access to layers and zones on connected instruments, and a SuperNATURAL button maps the controllers automatically to compatible Roland instruments such as the INTEGRA-7, JUPITER-80 and JUPITER-50. A Function button gives access to further settings via the keys.
It connects to a computer through a USB Type B port and is powered over USB, with an AC adaptor as an alternative. There is also a MIDI OUT, a damper pedal jack and two assignable pedal jacks. The recessed rear panel leaves room for a laptop or monitor, and an iPad can be connected through Apple's Camera Connection Kit for Core MIDI apps.
