The A-01 combines a MIDI controller with a small sound generator in a metal-fronted case. As a controller it sends data over 5-pin MIDI, USB MIDI and Bluetooth LE MIDI, and it has separate CV and Gate outputs for older analog and modular synthesizers. Two assignable ribbon controls and dedicated dials can be set to pitch bend, modulation, sound preview, channel and polyphonic aftertouch, CC messages and system exclusive data.
The internal engine is an 8-bit monophonic synth that follows the concept of the Roland Boutique line. It is used together with a 16-step sequencer and offers memory for 16 controller patches, 16 synth tones and 16 sequencer patterns. A 192x40 graphic LCD shows parameters and the output waveform, and a 0.5 W mini-speaker allows playing without external audio. A headphone jack is also fitted.
The unit runs from four AA batteries or from USB bus power. The optional Roland K-25m dock adds 25 velocity-sensitive keys. The module measures 300 x 128 x 46 mm and weighs 950 g.
