A skeletal-plinth belt-drive turntable with an RB880 tonearm, triple-layer glass platter and an external Neo power supply that offers electronic speed change. It is aimed at vinyl listeners who want a high-end Rega deck with a choice of factory-fitted moving magnet or moving coil cartridges.

The Planar 8 is a two-speed (33 1/3 and 45 rpm) belt-drive turntable. Its plinth has a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core between two layers of high-pressure laminate, stiffened by a phenolic resin double brace between the tonearm mount and the main bearing. Rega describes the plinth as 30% lighter than that of the earlier RP8.
The record spins on a three-piece laminated glass platter made from two grades of Pilkington glass, with most of the mass at the rim. It sits on a single-piece machined aluminium sub-platter and a hardened tool steel spindle running in a brass housing. A 24 V synchronous motor is mounted from below and driven by a Neo PSU, which has a DSP generator, an anti-vibration circuit and user-adjustable fine speed control. The belt is a Rega EBLT type.
The RB880 tonearm uses a preloaded zero-tolerance bearing, a thinner stainless steel counterweight and a low-capacitance phono cable with locking phono plugs. Factory-fitted cartridge options include Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro and Apheta 3. The deck comes in matt Polaris grey or matt white and has a removable single-piece dustcover.
