The Planar 78 is a turntable that plays at 78 rpm only. It leaves out extra features and puts its parts budget into the components that matter for tracking old records. It comes with a hand-assembled RB220 tonearm, which has a polymer bearing, a die-cast arm tube and a three-point plinth mount designed to reduce stress on the plinth.
The platter is made from phenolic resin and works as a flywheel. A 24 V low-noise synchronous motor turns it through an Advanced EBLT drive belt that is fitted as standard. The plinth has a matt black finish, introduced in January 2023, and a clear dust cover is included.
No cartridge is supplied. Rega makes a dedicated moving magnet cartridge for 78s, the RB78, which is sold separately. Because a moving magnet cartridge is the intended match, it can be paired with an MM phono stage such as the Fono MM or Fono Mini A2D, or with an amplifier that has a built-in MM phono input. The turntable is covered by Rega's lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
