The Twin-Servo is a 500 series mic preamp based on the Jensen JE-990 circuit first developed by Deane Jensen in 1988. Two fully discrete 990 op-amps are cascaded to provide 60dB of gain, giving lower distortion and wider bandwidth than a single-stage design, along with reduced noise at low and mid signal levels.
All capacitors are removed from the audio path and replaced by two DC servo feedback circuits to limit phase shift. Oversized Jensen transformers sit at both input and output, giving a stated frequency response of 0.5Hz to 150kHz and a large amount of headroom. The circuit runs in Class-A before moving to Class-AB at higher levels.
It can be used with condenser microphones, ribbon microphones (a Radial McBoost can add up to 25dB for very low-output vintage ribbons, for about 85dB total) and active DIs such as the Radial PZ-DI. As a 500 series module it mounts in a compatible rack such as the Radial Workhorse Power Rack.
