Decoder
A discontinued mid/side stereo matrix with three built-in mic preamps, designed for recording M/S stereo without a mixer. It suits studio and field recordists who want a pre-mixed stereo output from figure-8 or cardioid microphone setups.

The Decoder combines three microphone preamps with a sum-difference mid/side matrix, so an M/S pair can be recorded and monitored as a finished stereo image without setting up a console. Input 1 takes the mid microphone and input 2a takes the side microphone. A link button duplicates the side signal, pans it and flips its phase to produce the usual M/S image with a figure-8 microphone. Input 2b allows a pair of cardioid microphones to be used in place of the figure-8.
Phantom power and independent level control are provided for the preamps. The inputs can also be switched to +4dBu line level, which lets pre-recorded material be processed at mix-down. A side microphone can be tracked and the stereo image decided later.
The chassis is made from 14-gauge steel with an internal I-beam frame and book-end construction that shields the controls from impact. A full bottom no-slip pad gives electrical insulation and mechanical isolation. The unit can be rack mounted alone or with other Radial products using an optional rack kit. Radial lists the product as discontinued and no longer shipping.
