The kit combines a compact metal frame with an 8-inch mesh snare, three 8-inch mesh toms, three 10-inch cymbal pads, a hi-hat control pedal and a 6-inch rubber kick pad. The frame follows the layout of an acoustic kit more closely than the earlier DM-1X, and the pad rods adjust in height and rotate freely.

The sound module has three buttons for metronome speed, kit selection and output volume. It holds 12 preset kits and 3 user kits, with samples covering rock, blues, jazz, metal and Chinese styles. A holder on the module takes a phone or tablet, and the Drum Touch app for iOS and Android gives access to kit selection, custom kits and a metronome with tempo, volume, time signature and rhythm settings.

The module connects to a Mac or Windows computer over USB as a 2-channel audio interface plus MIDI, and has Bluetooth for audio playback and MIDI. A 3.5 mm TRRS AUX IN lets a phone record audio and video together (cable not included). Output is mono, and a headphone jack is fitted.
