The U 87 Ai is a pressure-gradient large-diaphragm condenser microphone first introduced in 1967. It has three directional patterns (omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8), plus a switchable pad and a switchable low cut, so it can be set up for sources from close vocals to room and overhead positions.
Its capsule uses the same dual-diaphragm design as the earlier U 67. The head amplifier is a FET circuit with a short signal path and a transformer-balanced output, which gives high common-mode rejection. Noted applications include vocals, voice-over, dubbing, audio books, acoustic guitar, drum overheads, bass and guitar cabinets, solo classical instruments and stereo-pair piano recording.
The microphone runs on 48 V phantom power (P48) and connects through a 3-pin XLR. It is offered in nickel or black (mt) finishes, as a microphone with wooden box, as a Studio Set with EA 87 shock mount, or as a Stereo Set with two microphones in an aluminium case.
