U 47
The U 47 is a tube large-diaphragm condenser studio microphone introduced by Neumann in 1949, and the first to offer electrically switched cardioid and omnidirectional patterns. It suits vocal and instrument recording in studios, and is also of interest to collectors of historic microphones.
- Tube condenser microphone introduced in 1949
- First mic with electrical cardioid/omni pattern switching
- M7 capsule, later replaced by the K 47
- Tube circuit with output transformer, VF 14 tube
- Long body and short body versions (23 mm shorter)
- Production discontinued in 1965

The U 47 uses the M7 dual-diaphragm condenser capsule, later replaced by the K 47, in a housing that also holds the tube circuit. Polar pattern is switched electrically between cardioid and omnidirectional, so no capsule heads need to be swapped. The signal path is a classic tube circuit with an output transformer, built around the Telefunken VF 14 tube.
The VF 14 has an unusually high heater voltage, which lets the microphone run from a single supply voltage for both heater and anode. This simplified battery operation and allowed long cable runs without readjusting the heater voltage. The design achieved a low-noise performance that is still regarded as good today.
Production ran from 1949 and was discontinued in 1965. Over that time the housing was shortened by 23 mm (long and short body versions), the basket changed from polished to satin nickel, and the K 47 capsule with polyester diaphragms replaced the M7 with PVC diaphragms. Related models are the U 48 (cardioid / figure-of-eight, 1957), the U 47 fet (1972) and the M 147 (1998).
