The TLM 49 is a fixed-cardioid pressure-gradient condenser microphone built around the K 47 capsule, the capsule design also used in the Neumann U 47 and M 49. It has the large, acoustically open headgrille of the M 49. Where those classics use tubes, this model has a transformerless solid-state head amplifier tuned to behave like a tube circuit.
The circuit is voiced to saturate softly at higher levels. Distortion is 0.5% at 110 dB SPL and rises gradually to 5% at 129 dB SPL. Self-noise is 12 dB-A. The sound has clear bass, a strong midrange and a gentle presence lift above 2 kHz. It is aimed mainly at vocals and also suits acoustic guitar and upright bass.
The microphone runs on standard 48 V phantom power (P48) and connects through a 3-pin XLR output, so no external power supply is needed. The set is finished in nickel and includes the EA 3 shock mount.
