The KMR 81 D is a shotgun microphone that moves the analog KMR 81 i design into the digital domain. It works on the pressure-gradient interference transducer principle and has a supercardioid/lobe pattern aimed at keeping off-axis sound free of coloration. It is intended for medium-distance pickup in film and documentary production.
A patented Neumann A/D conversion process with 28-bit internal word length is built into the capsule housing, followed by fixed-point DSP. The output is 24-bit AES/EBU (AES 3) at sampling rates from 44.1 to 192 kHz. Digital operation brings an extended dynamic range, EMC-safe operation and clipping protection from an integrated peak limiter/compressor.
The microphone connects through an XLR 3 F connector and is set up with the DMI-2 or DMI-8 digital microphone interface and the Remote Control Software (RCS), which can store pre-programmed settings in the microphone. Neumann has discontinued the Solution-D digital line: it is available while stock lasts, and service is guaranteed until 31 Dec 2030.
