KM 185

The KM 185 is a small diaphragm condenser microphone with a hypercardioid pickup pattern, aimed at studio and stage work on acoustic instruments, drums and percussion. It has a transformerless output stage, low self-noise and a high maximum SPL.

  • Hypercardioid pattern, no off-axis coloration
  • Self-noise 15 dB-A, S/N ratio 79 dB (A-weighted)
  • Max SPL 142 dB for 0.5% THD
  • Sensitivity 10 mV/Pa ± 1 dB
  • Transformerless electronics, 48 V phantom power
  • Nickel or black (mt) finish, single or stereo set

Cur síos

The KM 185 is a non-modular small diaphragm condenser microphone from Neumann's Series 180, which also includes the omnidirectional KM 183 and the cardioid KM 184. It uses a pressure gradient transducer with a hypercardioid pattern that stays consistent across frequency, giving strong rejection of sound arriving from the rear at 120°, including at low frequencies.

The frequency response is smooth and linear with a slight treble lift around 10 kHz. A transformerless head amplifier gives a dynamic range of 127 dB, a self-noise of 15 dB-A and a maximum SPL of 142 dB at 0.5% THD. Typical uses include piano, acoustic guitar, strings, wind instruments, drums and percussion, for example isolating a snare from hi-hat spill. It is also used for classical vocals and in TV and radio work thanks to its small size.

The microphone has a low-impedance output on a 3-pin XLR and runs on 48 V phantom power (P48). It can drive cable runs of up to 300 meters (1000 feet). It is available in nickel (KM 185) or black (KM 185 mt), as a single microphone or a stereo set, each microphone supplied with a WNS 100 windscreen and an SG 21 bk stand mount swivel.
