Small diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern and transformerless electronics. Aimed at studio and stage work on acoustic instruments, drums and stereo or surround recording, and at broadcast use where a small, unobtrusive mic is preferred.

The KM 184 is a non-modular small diaphragm condenser microphone from the Neumann Series 180, which also includes the omnidirectional KM 183 and the hypercardioid KM 185. Its pressure-gradient capsule has a cardioid pattern that stays consistent across frequency, with rejection of rear sound maintained at low frequencies.
The frequency response is smooth and linear, with a slight lift around 9 kHz. A transformerless head amplifier gives a dynamic range of 125 dB, self-noise of 13 dB-A and a maximum SPL of 138 dB at 0.5% THD. The low-impedance output allows cable runs of up to 300 m (1000 ft) without transmission losses.
It is suited to piano, drums, percussion, acoustic guitar, strings, woodwinds and brass, as well as stereo and surround recording and TV or radio work. It connects through a 3-pin XLR and runs on 48 V phantom power. Variants include nickel and black (mt) finishes, stereo sets and an eight-microphone Octo Set.
