The 8D converts, routes and splits digital audio between AES3, S/PDIF, USB and AVB/TSN. Any input can be sent to any output or to several outputs, including to and from the computer and other devices on the AVB network. Sample rate conversion is applied on all digital inputs. Word clock input and output let it sync with other digital gear or house clock.
On board is a 48-input digital mixer with 7 stereo aux busses, 3 groups, access to 64 network inputs and DSP effects: reverb, EQ modeled on British analog console EQs, and compression modeled on the LA-2A. Processing is 32-bit floating point. A colour LCD shows metering for all I/O, and a front-panel headphone output with volume control can monitor any stereo pair. Analysis tools include FFT, spectrogram, oscilloscope, X-Y plot and phase analyzer.
The unit connects to a Mac or PC over USB or AVB/TSN. Mixing and settings are controlled through a web app served by the unit itself, usable from a browser on a computer, tablet or phone on the same network, including Wi-Fi via a router plugged in by Ethernet. A mounting bracket kit pairs it with another MOTU half-rack unit, and AudioDesk software is included.
