Reference 5 Meta is a passive, three-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker. Its Uni-Q array places a 25 mm aluminium dome tweeter with MAT at the centre of a 125 mm aluminium cone midrange driver, so both work as a single point source. Four 165 mm aluminium cone bass drivers handle the low end. MAT is a maze-like structure that absorbs 99% of the unwanted sound radiated from the rear of the tweeter.
The cabinet was shaped with finite element analysis to set its geometry and bracing, and Constrained Layer Damping converts remaining vibration into heat. A Shadow Flare surface extends the Uni-Q waveguide and reduces cabinet diffraction. Flexible Port Technology lets the bass be tuned to the room, with short and long port options that give a -6dB range from 35Hz or 32Hz up to 45kHz.
The speaker is hand built in Maidstone, UK, and each pair can be matched to within 0.5dB of a laboratory reference standard. It needs an external amplifier rated for 50-400W. It is offered in five finishes and sold as a pair.
