Mohican

The Mohican plays standard CDs and nothing else. It uses original Sanyo CD drive mechanisms paired with servo boards designed by Hegel, and DAC chips that work natively at 16 bit/44.1 kHz. Leaving out SACD, DSD, apps and extra digital inputs is a deliberate choice, since the maker argues those functions raise cost and can lower CD sound quality.

Timing is handled by a custom clock design that is controlled by Hegel's patented SoundEngine, which is used to keep jitter very low. The player is listed among the maker's discontinued products.

Output is available as fixed line level on unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR, with a single BNC digital output (true 75 ohm). The line output is 2.6 V RMS, frequency response runs from 0 Hz to 50 kHz and the noise floor is -145 dB. The chassis is finished in black and silver and weighs 6.5 kg net.
