The 8381A is a large, free-standing, three-box active main monitor with a point-source design and networked room correction through Genelec's GLM software. It is aimed at mixing and mastering engineers in demanding control rooms who need high output and consistent imaging.

The 8381A is a two-enclosure main monitor, stacked into one unit, that combines a coaxial midrange and tweeter with a quad midrange array and a double low-woofer arrangement. The aim is a single point-source radiation pattern, so sound colour and imaging stay consistent as the listener moves around the room. A directivity control waveguide limits the influence of room reflections. Each driver has its own amplifier and active crossover, and two rack-mounted RAM-81 amplifier units supply 2 x 5426 W of Class D power.
It is a Smart Active Monitor, so it connects to Genelec's GLM software over a CAT5 network. GLM handles level, distance delay and room-response compensation using the AutoCal 2 calibration algorithm, and settings can be stored in the monitor itself. The monitor can stand on the floor or sit higher using the supplied incliner wedges to aim the acoustic axis at the listening position.
Signal connections are balanced analogue and AES/EBU digital on XLR, each with input and output, plus four RJ45 GLM network ports. The monitor is available in black or white, and the package includes a SonicAdvisor calibration service.
