The CL-520 is a 500-series mic preamp and instrument DI based on an updated TRUE Systems preamp core, developed with TRUE Systems founder Tim Spencer. It provides up to 76 dB of gain in two ranges, with a detented gain control for repeatable settings. A +16 dB high-gain mode adds extra gain on demand, and a 180° phase invert is included.
Control is through an illuminated touch interface that drives microprocessor-controlled telecom relays instead of conventional switches, keeping signal paths short. A blink-delay warning precedes phantom power and high-gain engagement to avoid accidental switching. A 48V selector chooses between phantom power and a Dynamic/Ribbon mode, which raises input impedance to 10 kΩ and takes the input capacitors out of the signal path. A continuously variable high-pass filter covers 25 Hz to 420 Hz, and four-level metering shows signal level.
The module fits standard API 500-series racks and power supplies. A DI input with a FET-based THRU jack lets an instrument signal feed the preamp and pass on to an amp, another DI or a further module. The circuit is fully balanced with rail-to-rail design and 0.1% precision resistors. It is also offered as a matched stereo pair.
