The Cloudlifter CL-Zi combines a mic activator with a DI function. It gives passive microphones and instruments up to +25 dB of gain through patented Class-A discrete JFET circuitry, and it sits between the source and the preamp.
A continuously variable impedance control (Vari-Z) covers 150 Ω to 15 kΩ. It lets the user match or deliberately mismatch the source to the preamp to change tone. A variable high-pass filter works together with this control to reduce low frequencies. A three-position output switch offers +25 dB, +12 dB and +8 dB settings for sources of different levels.
Inputs are combo XLR/quarter-inch connectors, so both microphones and instruments can be connected. The unit runs on phantom power from the preamp, needing no batteries or external supply. It does not pass phantom power on to the microphone, so passive ribbon microphones are protected. The chassis is steel and the unit is handbuilt in Tucson, Arizona.
