The Cloudlifter CL-X sits between a passive microphone and a preamp or interface and raises the mic signal using discrete Class-A JFET circuitry. A custom CineMag input transformer is included to add colour and harmonic detail, and its response grows with the level of the source.
A two-position switch selects +36 dB for maximum gain on quiet sources, or +12 dB for louder sources such as drums and guitar amplifiers, where the transformer character is more pronounced. The input is loaded at 3 kOhm. The unit uses phantom power supplied by the preamp or interface, so it needs no batteries or external supply.
It connects with XLR in and out on Neutrik Gold connectors. It does not pass phantom power on to the microphone, so passive ribbon microphones are protected. The chassis is steel, and the unit is built by hand in Tucson, Arizona.
