The Cloudlifter CL-X2 sits between a passive microphone and a preamp and raises the mic signal using discrete Class-A JFET circuitry. A custom CineMag input transformer adds colour and harmonic content, and it responds dynamically: the harder the source drives it, the more character it imparts.
A switchable output attenuator selects between a +12 dB mode, intended for louder sources such as drums and guitar amplifiers where the transformer character comes through, and a +36 dB mode for maximum gain with quiet sources. The input is loaded at 3 kohm.
It connects with XLR in and out, with Neutrik Gold connectors, and needs no batteries or external supply. It runs on +48V phantom power sent from the interface or preamp along the mic cable, but does not pass phantom power on to the microphone, which keeps ribbon and tube microphones safe. The unit has a steel chassis and is built by hand in Tucson, Arizona.
