Balance Reference Phono

Two-box phono preamplifier with a separate dual-mono power supply and two fully separate phono inputs for moving-coil and moving-magnet cartridges, each available balanced (XLR) or unbalanced (RCA). Aimed at analogue listeners who want adjustable loading and a balanced signal path.

  • Two separate phono inputs for MC and MM cartridges
  • Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs and outputs
  • Gain 46 dB (MM) and 66 dB (MC) at 1 kHz
  • MC loading from 50 Ω to 10 kΩ; MM capacitance steps up to 400 pF
  • Separate dual-mono power supply in milled aluminium case
  • Two 6.3 mm headphone outputs and metal remote

Cur síos

The balance reference phono is a phono stage built around a balanced layout. It has two independent phono inputs, so two cartridges can stay connected at once, using either XLR or RCA (Cinch) connections. Each input can be switched between moving-magnet and moving-coil operation, with gain of 46 dB for MM and 66 dB for MC at 1 kHz. A switchable subsonic filter at 20 Hz and a stereo/mono switch are included, and these settings sit on the underside of the unit.

Loading can be matched to the cartridge. MM input capacitance offers 150 pF, 270 pF or 400 pF steps on top of the base value, and MC input impedance can be set from 50 Ω up to 10 kΩ. Equalisation uses two passive filters for the RIAA curve, with a stated accuracy of ±0.1 dB from 20 Hz to 100 kHz.

Power comes from a separate dual-mono supply housed in its own milled aluminium case, which keeps it apart from the signal path. Volume and input selection can be done on the front panel or with the supplied metal remote control. Outputs are XLR and RCA, and there are two 6.3 mm headphone sockets. Both housings are aluminium, in silver or black.
