The 851N plays music from streaming services (Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify), UPnP servers and NAS drives, internet radio, and local USB media. It also works as a standalone DAC through its digital and USB inputs. Upsampling of all sources to 24-bit/384kHz is handled by a second-generation ATF2 digital filter, which offers linear phase, minimum phase and steep modes.
Audio is converted by twin Analog Devices AD1955 24-bit DACs followed by a 2-pole differential Bessel analogue filter with DC servo, used for both the balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. Supported formats include ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, DSD (x64), WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+ and OGG Vorbis. The USB Type B input can run in USB Audio 1.0 or 2.0 mode, selectable by the user.
For connectivity there are an Ethernet port (10/100 Base-T) and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi via the supplied dongle. Digital inputs comprise AES/EBU, two coaxial S/PDIF and two TOSLINK optical. The player is Roon Ready, and a BT100 Bluetooth receiver (A2DP with aptX) is listed as compatible.
