The STUDIO XL works as a monitor controller and recording interface in a single desktop unit. Level is set with a large knob that drives a voltage controlled amplifier circuit rather than passing the signal through a potentiometer, which keeps stereo and phase balance consistent. Two Midas microphone preamps with +48 V phantom power handle microphones or line sources, in dual mono or stereo-link mode.
The unit switches between three independent pairs of studio monitors, each with its own level adjustment, and offers an Aux Mix stereo input and a front 3.5 mm stereo input for a phone or music player. Mono, Mute and Dim buttons are on the panel; Dim lowers the monitor signal by 20 dB. Two headphone outputs have separate level controls and a separate source selector.
For communication with performers, a built-in talkback microphone can be selected, or an external mic can be used, and an optional talkback footswitch frees the hands. The USB interface runs at up to 192 kHz and 24-bit as a 2x4 device, and 2-Track and Studio/Phones Amp outputs allow connection of recorders, extra sound cards, mixers or headphone distribution amplifiers.
