The 73 is a single-channel microphone preamplifier that follows the architecture of the larger Behringer 1273 in a smaller housing. It uses a Class A discrete circuit, with custom-built Midas transformers on both the input and output stages. The solid steel chassis is intended to give durability and isolation from neighbouring gear.

Gain is set with a stepped rotary switch that covers up to 80 dB and handles mic, line and instrument sources. The stepped design allows settings to be recalled consistently between sessions. A Trim control adds finer level adjustment for the recording device, which helps with very quiet sources.

Additional controls include phase invert, high/low impedance selection and front/rear input selection. The compact size makes it practical to place several units in one rack, or to pair it with an external EQ or compressor.
