The HD3 is a two-speaker system made up of one powered left speaker and one passive right speaker, joined by the supplied speaker wire with banana plugs. The powered speaker holds a Class AB analog amplifier, a 24-bit DAC and a Bluetooth receiver, so no separate receiver is needed. Each speaker has a 2.75" aramid fiber woofer and a 0.75" silk dome tweeter in a front-ported wood cabinet, with a detachable magnetic grille.
Inputs are Bluetooth (aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC), USB, a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack and stereo RCA. Sources on different inputs can stay connected at the same time. Rear connections also include stereo RCA outputs and a front headphone output. A bass reduction switch lets the low end be tailored when a subwoofer is added.
The USB input uses the built-in DAC and bypasses the computer's own audio hardware. A turntable needs a phono preamp stage, either built into the turntable or external. The switching power supply adapts to different mains voltages and the AC cord is detachable. An idle power-saving circuit switches off the final amplifier stage when no music is playing.
