The MPK261 combines a 61-key semi-weighted keyboard with velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads, eight faders, eight knobs and eight backlit switches. The keys are velocity-sensitive and respond to aftertouch, and octave up/down buttons extend the playable range. Controls are arranged in banks, so a modest set of physical controls can address a much larger set of parameters.

MPC-derived functions are built in: MPC Swing, Note Repeat, Full Level and 16 Levels, plus an arpeggiator with adjustable resolution, range and pattern. These are aimed at beat building and short melodic sequences from the pads.

It connects to a computer over USB, which also supplies power, and offers 5-pin MIDI in and out for hardware. Sockets are provided for an expression pedal and two sustain pedals or footswitches. A software package is included, covering MPC Beats, Ableton Live Lite, SONiVOX Eighty-Eight Ensemble, Hybrid 3, Xpand!2 and the VIP3.0 plugin host, along with a Komplete Select bundle through NKS integration.
